Adopt A Dog

Adopting a dog from Healing Species is fun and easy!

Rascal-sleepingkids-ADOPT-brownAdoptions are done by appointment – so just give us a call. Sometimes you'll find us at the Harbison Pet Smart store in Columbia, SC, on Saturdays from 11:00-4:00pm. Call us ahead of time to see if we'll be there! For adoption appointments or "meet and greets" call our Sanctuary at 803-535-6543 and leave a message. Being a small non-profit we do not pay someone to sit at our desk and answer our phone and we are usually out working in the field, but we do check messages! or e-mail us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. An Adopter Must...

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Agree never to tether or tie out adopted animal
  • Agree never to make adopted animal live his/her life in a pen
  • Provide adequate veterinary care
  • Agree to give adopted animal a home forever, knowing that the average life span of a companion animal is 12 years
  • Agree to spay/neuter adopted animal before he/she procreates, if they are not spayed/neutered at adoption due to age, knowing that each year in the United States alone each year between 3 & 4 million companion animals are euthanized (killed) due to overpopulation and lack of homes
  • Agree that if, for any reason adopter can no longer give the adopted animal the proper care and home, the adopter will give the adopted animal back to the Healing Species knowing that we will provide proper care until a home can be found

There is an adoption application and minimum tax-deductible donation fee of $100.00.  You'll find that this amount is usually much less than you'd pay at a store to purchase a dog.  We, at Healing Species, believe that our "mixed-breed-mutts" make the BEST COMPANIONS. Afterall, they get the best of all the breeds combined!  We do conduct home site visits and require you to agree not to tether the dog or make him live in a kennel.  We believe dogs should be a part of your family!  Our dogs have all been spayed or neutered unless too young.  If they are adopted out as young puppies, we require that you spay or neuter the dog at 6 months of age.  Why is it fair for some adopters to get a dog already spayed, and for others to have to pay for spaying after adoption?  Because "EVERYONE" wants puppies!  It is extremely difficult to adopt adult dogs. So by adopting an adult you get an added bonus!!

Healing Species is diligent to be forthright regarding any concerns or problems a rescued dog may have, but usually by the time they've lived with us at our Sanctuary, they have literally learned how to smile, and are ready to be loved!

Healing Species works very hard to match the perfect dog to the perfect family and we always make every effort to share everything we know about the dog.  However, once a dog is adopted, Healing Species is no longer liable or responsible for any occurrence regarding the dog.  The only thing we ask is that, if you are no longer able to provide a home for the dog, you sign and agree to return the dog to Healing Species.  You are not free to pass the dog along to a new home without a Healing Species screening of the new potential home.

Thank you for making this a more compassionate world – where peace on earth might truly stand a chance of taking hold, by starting with "THE LEAST OF THESE."
