Volunteering with Healing Species
Healing Species’ work is furthered with the help of our faithful volunteers! Below are opportunities for volunteer services:
Immediate Needs Trained volunteers to socialize rescues on a weekly or bi-weekly basis
Classroom Support
Healing Species Character and Compassion Curriculum is delivered by paid, trained, college educated professionals. If and when available, volunteers may accompany an instructor into the classroom to assist in the handling and care of the rescued dog. Volunteers are not trained to deliver the curriculum. Specific Duties of Volunteers in the classroom are to attend to the needs of the dog and the needs of the instructor.
- Bring an approved and bathed dog to the classroom
- Hold the dog on the leash
- Walk the dog around the classroom
- Provide outside breaks to the dog
- Assist with set up of the technical equipment such as video and audio presentations
- Hand out or collect papers
- Assist with classroom management
- Guest speaking
Office Support
- Copies of evaluation tools, handouts, curriculum
- Filing and office projects
- Answering phone calls, retrieving messages, making return phone calls
- Computer work for communication, reporting, newsletters, presentations, etc.
- Errands to post office, etc...
Sanctuary Animal and Property Care
- Socializing tentative or energetic rescued dogs
- Watering, feeding, and giving medications to dogs
- Assisting with property maintenance and care
- File management for dogs and adoptions
- Customer care for adoptees
- Transportation to veterinarian visits
- Assist on adoption days
Volunteers must:
- Complete an application and submit to commence the interview process. If applicant is under the age of 18, parent or guardian must accompany and sign the application with their student. Because of the demanding work and unique philosophies, not every applicant is an appropriate fit for Healing Species.
- Agree to a criminal background check
- Be naturally compassionate and patient with children, teens, peers, and animals
- Be a professional representative (pleasant and positive) in adverse situations, meeting and greeting the public
- Be willing to adhere to Healing Species training philosophies; i.e., our “love it out of them” method vs. reprimand
Volunteers receive an Orientation Training on the Organization’s mission, structure, policies and procedures. In addition, all volunteers receive on-the-job-training by shadowing staff or experienced volunteers and are under the direction and supervision of onsite staff.
